To Register: Use the "Register" tab at the top of this page.

The same content is presented 4 times. You do not need to register for more than one session, unless you want to repeat the training.

Mon, Jun 17, 2024 / 11:30am to 1:00pm

CARLI is pleased to offer a 3-week synchronous and asynchronous course on open educational resources.

Live Sessions via Zoom on June 10, 17, and 24 at 11:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. (materials for first session sent to participants on June 3)

Attendees should plan to attend each live session for month that they register. The content of each month's session will be the same; register for one option only.

CARLI is planning to offer this program multiple times throughout the year.

The virtual program will contain both synchronous (3 live 90 minutes Zoom sessions) and asynchronous (readings, videos, etc.) to be completed before each live session. The live sessions will include some presentations, but the aim of the program planners is that these will incorporate a flipped classroom model to build community among participants as all share and discuss the topics.

Technology used for live sessions: Zoom, ideally participants will be able to use video as well as audio.

The asynchronous portions of the training, shared with participants weekly, should not take longer than one hour of your time prior to each live session.

The train-the-trainer program is designed to help the novice person learning about open educational resources to apply the information from this program to build their own local programs and workshops as they move up the Bloom’s Taxonomy from remember and understand to apply.

Registration: To register for the June course, please click here. The space available for this course is limited. CARLI plans to offer this course multiple times in the future.

Registration Deadline: June 3 (or until full).

If you have any questions, please send them to CARLI Support.

Tue, Jun 18, 2024 / 9:00am to 3:00pm

The CARLI Instruction Committee's 12th annual Instruction Showcase, to be held virtually via Zoom on Tuesday, June 18th.

Keynote Speaker:

María Evelia Emerson, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign

The typical college student is often thought of as an 18-year-old entering college directly after high school. They live on campus and their main “job” is school. While they are learning independence, they can still turn to their parents for support when needed. However, data shows that this is not the student with whom we typically interact in our libraries and classrooms. Our students make up a wealth of experiences, identities, and strengths, but when librarians and higher education continue to design services and instruction with the “traditional” student in mind, we erase the existence of those that fall outside of this population and miss opportunities to approach our users in new ways. In this keynote, María will discuss the importance of students' sense of belonging and seeing themselves in the library.

Bio: María is the Student Success Librarian at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. She earned her BA in Spanish and International Studies at Hope College, and her MLIS at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Her research grows out of her work at small colleges across Illinois and now at UIUC on how academic libraries can support a sense of belonging in students.

It will empower those without a background in computers or coding to feel confident doing digital preservation in archives! The presentation will help identify different storage media encountered in archival collections as well as introduce digital forensics tools to help with data integrity and authenticity. Finally, participants will have an opportunity to experiment with Library of Congress’s Bagger software to demonstrate how you might transfer files safely off hardware and generate metadata while you do it!
